People with disabilities cannot approach Eternal Flame

A group of people with disabilities today visited the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex to pay tribute to the 1.5 million victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. However, they were not able to approach the Eternal Flame because the memorial does not have wheelchair access. They were helped by others. “Like all Armenians in the world we commemorate the victims of the Armenian Genocide but we cannot do it on April 24 because it is difficult to do technically. The memorial cannot accommodate wheelchairs,” says Armen Alaverdyan, Chairman of the "Unison" NGO. He says the state is obliged to arrange moving platforms near the entrance that will not disturb anyone and will occupy very little space. “They will spend about $10 000. I think our decision-makers do not pay much attention to this issue though people, who find it their duty to come to Tsitsernakaberd and pay respect to the Genocide victims, will do it despite all obstacles,” Armen Alaverdyan added. The group laid flowers at the Eternal Flame and said the Lord’s Prayer: "Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.…”
