Shakespeare Lives… in Yerevan metro (video)
On May 20, Yerevan metro stations turned into a real stage where actors from the Pokr (Small) Theatre presented performances and performed passages from William Shakespeare. Also, actor Arsen Grigoryan read Armenian translations of Shakespeare at Yeritasardakan metro station. The initiative belongs to the British Council (Armenia) which has joined Shakespeare Lives, a global programme of events and activities celebrating the world's most popular playwright's work on the 400th anniversary of his death in 2016. Talking to A1+ Vahan Badalyan, Art Director of the theatre, said, “Metro is probably a weird place to stage performances but our goal was to bring Shakespeare closer to people, to our daily routine, and to show that Shakespeare remains one of the modern authors 400 years have passed since his death.” “We chose the metro as it is one of the most extraordinary places in Yerevan and it is possible to attract and impress ordinary passers-by,” said Narek Tovmasyan, Art Programmes Manager at the British Council Armenia.
