Reason for a large number of cancer deaths in Armenia
Environment today isn’t properly protected in Armenia, thinks environmentalist Karine Danielyan, “During the years of independence we have behaved as greedy, barbarous people depleting nature.” Today the biggest environmental issue in Armenia is water deficit and its pollution, thinks environmentalist Inga Zarafyan. She thinks that during the recent years this issue has escalated, “At present there is such a problem in Goght and Garni, the waters of the Azat River aren’t enough to meet all the needs of the region. It is a serious problem, which exists not only in these two communities, we have water deficit in the whole territory of Armenia.” Touching upon the pollution of water, the environmentalist expressed concern that during the recent years most of the rivers in Armenia have been ranked as the fifth class rivers, and according to international standards it is considered to be the worst indicator, “We don’t have water treatment stations in our country, which eliminate polluted water. And it isn’t accidental that Armenia ranks the first with the number of cancer deaths, that very water makes our food poisonous. If we want to be healthy, we must protect quality of water.” In reply to the question by “A1+” how the issue of cutting down of trees must be solved, Mrs Zarafyan answered, “Formerly there was a forest in the front part of our victory park, at present there is no single tree, the whole territory was developed, the same happened with Parks of Dalma, Nork forest. During the recent years, yards have also been developed and no trees are left.”
