German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Head of the Christian Democrats in parliament, Volker Kauder, that she is not going to distance herself from a Bundestag resolution on the 1915 massacre of Armenians by Ottoman forces that has strained ties with Turkey, Reuters reports. During a meeting with his party members, Kauder said Merkel had voted to support the resolution during a party meeting before the vote, although she was not present when the vote took place in June. On July 2, the German Bundestag adopted a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Turkey recalled its ambassador from Berlin after German MPs approved the motion describing the massacre of Armenians by Ottoman forces as genocide.
