The Republicans are not guilty that some opposition figures broke an agreement reached over the local elections in Vanadzor city, Armenian lawmaker Lernik Aleksanyan said on Oct. 12. “He did not sign… That person… The political forces signed it… Let us consider the issue from another angle and see whether he is a good teammate or not. Here is the problem. Let his party care about the rest,” said the member of the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) faction. “No one has sold votes to the HHK; simply some people affiliated with another political force appreciated our candidate whom they knew better than the other candidate. This is one of the important features of local government,” he said. “Otherwise, why do political forces participate in local elections? A lot depends on the individual regardless of his party affiliation,” the lawmaker continued. Opposition forces in Armenia are unable to come to power even after garnering most votes in local elections. “I do not accept the idea of “opposition majority,” Lernik Aleksanyan said. Nor does he care about the fact that various opposition forces signed an agreement to support one candidate in the elections. “How did they unite? By document? That is not enough. Did they get around an ideology? They united to elect a mayor for them, but that is not an ideology.” Lernik Aleksanyan does not think that the HHK defamed itself by persuading some opposition figures to vote for its candidate. “Those were individual cases,” he said and repeated that the so-called opposition forces did not have a common ideology.
