Armenia ranks as an aging country, as according to the official data of 2015, 16.3 % of Armenia’s population is over 60, and almost 11 % is over 65, so consequently, according to the international ranking, the country is considered to be aging. The main reasons for the aging population are migration of the young, fall in birth rate and extension of life expectancy. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the elderly became more vulnerable; one part of them were deprived of their jobs, the young, who were supposed to take care of them, left abroad. Those, who didn’t have children, faced the risk of maintaining their physical existence. This week’s topic of “Kiraki” (Sunday) is the elderly with their problems and dreams. The program hosted Anahit Gevorgyan, Head of the Department of the Elderly Issues of the RA Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and Meri Davtyan, Consultant on Social Work at “Mission Armenia” NGO. Our colleagues from “Kyavar” and “Sosi” TV companies prepared videos on this topic.
