The cost of groceries continues to go up in Armenia as the New Year approaches. Babken Pipoyan, Chairman of the Informed and Protected Consumer NGO, says citizens are right when they complain of price hikes. If there is no competition, there is inflation, he says. “Some businesses offer discounts, which is not a gesture of goodwill, but a mechanism not to stay out of the market. Inflation is observed in places where business entities can play alone; they do not face any problems and are not afraid to get out of the market,” Mr. Pipoyan said. Mr. Pipoyan says the consumers who follow the right policy and buy what they need in reality rather than what others buy, can avoid inflation. “Pork is sold at AMD 2600 instead of the former AMD 2100 because consumers prefer to buy pork leg. We are artificially increasing the price of pork leg,” he said.
