Residents in Armavir again close road to Yerevan
The situation has been tense in Armavir marz since Wednesday morning. Photojournalist Gagik Shamshyan reports from the marz that the locals have closed Etchmiadzin-Ashtarak roadway as a sign of protest, demanding full compensation for the damage caused by hail. The farmers say they will not reopen the road until their demand is met. They claim that egg-sized hailstones destroyed 90 percent of the wheat, onions, eggplants, potatoes and beans. “The hail broke the backbone of the farmers and now we have to close the road every day after yesterday’s visit of Governor Ashot Ghahramanyan who only gave empty promises. He said that the Governor’s Office stands by farmers and will not let them alone. They cheated again as they did last year,” said one of the protesters.
