The inauguration of the first solar powered bus stops took place in Yerevan on July 7. The solar-powered bus stop on Moscovyan street (in front of the Yerevan Theatre of the Young Spectator, 3 Moskovyan Str., Yerevan) was opened with the support of the European Union to Armenia. This is the second bust stop of its type in the Armenian capital. Situated on Moskovyan and Baghramyan streets, the bus stops will enable residents and visitors of Yerevan to charge their cell-phones and other digital gadgets with free solar energy. Each solar powered bus stop can fully charge up to 24 phones daily. H.E. Mr. Piotr Switalski, Ambassador, Head of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Armenia, says they initiated the installation of solar panels at two public transport bus stops of Yerevan to promote the use of renewable energy in the country. By developing solar energy Armenia can gain energy independence, he added. The solar panels will remain at the bus stops for a year and will be given to institutions without compensation.
