RUSSIA TAKES CONTROL OVER 80 PERCENT OF ARMENIAN ENERGY INDUSTRY

Economy

Today, Russian and Armenian officials marked signing of an agreement between the two countries by drinking champagne. The agreement signed by Armenian PM Andranik Margaryan and the head of “Russia’s United Energy Systems” shareholding company Anatoly Chubays gives Russia the right to run 80% of Armenia’s energy-producing system.

Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is still not to be closed, said Chubays after signing the agreement.

In his words, there is now no need to re-equip the plant. There are serious problems in financial sphere, in particular, connected with fuel import that caused the plant to cease functioning in the last winter.

“We are aware of the works being carried out to ensure the plant security. These works are to be continued”, Chubays said.

The Russian partner said with certainty that no changes in consumer prices are planned. “Price policy is being determined by Armenian government and nothing will be changed in this”, he said.

It isn’t yet clear how much money is to be invested in Armenian energy system. The issue is still under discussion.
