$ 20 MILLION TO ARMENIA BY WORLD BANK

Economy

Donna Dowsett- Coirolo, World Bank Regional Director has today informed in WB Yerevan Office that WB is going to allot a credit of $ 20 million to Armenia for implementation of “strategic program on poverty reduction”.

On October 25 Karen Chshmarityan, Armenian Minister of Trade and Economic Development, announced in “Congress” Hotel that there isn’t a human poverty in Armenia, there is revenue poverty here.

We asked Mrs. Dowsett- Coirolo if it wouldn’t be more efficient to direct the $ 20 million to increasing the revenues of people in that case.

”Poor people make 42,9 % of Armenia’s population and 7,4% are the poorest. It is necessary to study at this aspect whether those people enjoy proper health care, education etc. All these weak points were cited by Government in the strategic program on poverty reduction. WB has a wish to support settlement of the issues. I don’t know what Trade Minister could have meant”, she said.

Minister Chshmarityan has grounded his statement this way: “Unlike some other countries where people haven’t even seen asphalt, where children don’t attend schools, where majority of people is hungry, 2-figure economic growth in fixed in Armenia”.
