SEMINAR ON LAND MINES HELD IN YEREVAN
Support A1+!Every year 15 to 20 thousands people dye from land mines all over the globe. UNO intends to intensify its efforts on prevention of mine proliferation. 125 countries have signed UN Convention against land mines since 1997.
Armenia conducts works on reducing land mines application. Mine-relating issues are under discussion of a two-day seminar held in Yerevan with the presence of foreign experts. Armenian side informed guests about the fact that a group of Armenian mine-sniffing specialists has participated in various humanitarian mine-clearing events. The seminar organisers say the event is being held in a bid to learn UN Convention impact on the security in the region.
The factors preventing the region’s countries from adopting the Convention were discussed as well.
“We intend to consider possible alternative types of weapon for land mine replacement”, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Tatul Margaryan says.
Official sources say 33 states have already completed the process of land mines decommissioning and taken 1 billion 400 millions dollars. And the number of the countries producing mines has dropped from 55 to 14 for the last decade.
It is unknown yet what exactly is to be discussed, as journalists were denied access to the further course of the seminar - they were given an opportunity to listen only the first three speeches.
