MASS MEDIA BILL UNDER DISCUSSION

Social

Justice Deputy Minister Ashot Abovyan, who is the author of the Mass Media Bill, told journalists the Bill wasn’t Justice Ministry’s sole burden. He said different proposals are to be taken into consideration by working group, however, without specifying what kinds of proposals he meant.

“If so, why our opinion was omitted?”, the Yerevan Press Club representative Mesrop Harutyunyan asked many times before obtaining the answer. The Deputy Minister said he’s agree, ”the bill is too flexible, but this is no more than 10th Article of European Convention ”.

“It is rather the law against journalists than for journalists”, said the “Haykakan Zhamanak” newspaper Editor-in-Chief Nikol Pashinyan.

Media representatives have few grounds for optimism. They say after discussion in Parliament the bill may change for the worse. “Dozens of bills have already faced such a fate”, Pashinyan says.
