JOURNALISTS’ UNION WON’T OFFICIALLY SECOND KOCHARYAN’S CANDIDATURE
Support A1+!The 10-th congress of Journalists’ Union held today.
“Our union is worried about “A1+” TV Company ceasing. I think, the reason to that is the Law, approved by Parliament and not the decision by TV and Radio National Committee” , Astghik Gevorgyan, Chair for Journalists’ Union says.
According to her, if the appropriate committee of Parliament took into consideration the proposal by the working group of Journalists’ Union, we would avoid reality at present .
Under the version, introduced by the working group, national committee members are not nominated by the president of the country. They are elected from journalistic organisations and the political powers in Parliament.
Union Chair dwelt on attempts of free speech restriction.
“The clause over freedom of speech is placed in the 24-th article of Constitution. As to other legal regulations, they are directed to limitation of that right” .
Mrs. Gevorgyan also introduced the problems of information field. Especially lack of ethics was stressed .
“Rules of journalism ethics have never been infringed the way like now” , Eduard Shahiryan, representative of elder journalists’ generation says.
Language of young journalists, their literacy and superficiality was deeply criticised .
At the congress a suggestion was made to publish both a theoretical and practical periodical. Materials, regarding union members, ethics rules and other issues will be published there.
By the way, this ordinary congress coincided with both presidential and parliamentary elections, like the previous one in 1997. But the Union didn’t express any standpoint on what candidate it would back up .
“It’s a social organisation and journalists have different political and ideological approaches to things. We can’t make or oblige anyone to vote for any candidate” , Astghik Gevorgyan says.
