7000 refugees acquired citizenship of Armenia till 2000. After that 55000 refugees have changed their status up to now. But the figure, 62000 don’t make the majority of the refugees.
There are 382.000 refugees registered in Armenia. The Armenian Government has made a decision regarding them – amendments were made to the Law on “Citizenship of Armenia”. The previous Law fixed term for the refugees – they could become citizens of Armenia till 2003. Taking into account the circumstance that there are people wishing to receive citizenship of Armenia unlike those leaving Armenia, a decision was made. The term on appealing for citizenship of Armenia is prolonged till December 31, 2005.
The housing problem has role in wish for receiving the status of Armenian citizen. Of course, no one in Armenia is pressed to be a citizen but some conditions are set for them. E.g, under the Armenian Legislation, refugees first need to accept citizenship in order to become the owners of their temporary dwellings.
According to Gagik Eganyan, head for Refugees and Migration Department, for the first time the Armenian Government assumed to solve the housing problems of about 4500 refugees within 2-2,5 years coming.
A special committee on refugees was established in Parliament. Though the structure in Parliament and the governmental one don’t co-operate, they are occupied with the same problem.
