FOR THE INTERESTS OF THE DISABLED

On August 1, 2003 6 Armenian public organizations founded Coalition to agitate for interests of the mentally retarded. Today the presentation of three-month program accomplished by the Coalition took place.

According to data of the Ministry of Health there are 115 000 disabled people in Armenia, 20% of them suffer mental problems.

As a result of agitation it was concluded that the main problem of the disabled in Armenia is prophylaxis and diagnostics of mental retardation. Mentally deficient people usually face social difficulties, they are not always easily accepted by the society.

A document on the results of the program was worked out and will be presented to appropriate state instances and local and international organizations.
