GEORGIAN ARMENIANS WILL SERVE IN GEORGIAN ARMY

Social

Armenian parliament’s fall session starts the next week’s Tuesday. Military service bill is included in the session agenda.

A similar bill is to be put also on Georgian parliament floor soon, A-Info news agency reports. 95% of young men from Georgia’s Armenian-dominated regions Samtskhe-Javakhk and Kvemo Kartli haven’t serve in Georgian Army since the Soviet Union’s collapse.

Georgian officials used to say that they were exempted from military service to avoid incidents on ethnic grounds.

Under the law, any draftee can get one-year adjournment after paying 200 lari for that. The opportunity of adjournment isn’t included in the new bill.

After the new law adoption Armenians will have to fulfil compulsory national service duties in Georgian Army.
