Every year, on December 7, all the Armenians in different sides of the world recall what happened in the year 1988. At 11:41 a.m. 40% of the territory of Armenia turned into a disaster zone. The fortitude of the earthquake in the epicenter which included the city of Spitak and its 12 villages was 10 degrees. 21 towns and 342 villages suffered from the earthquake. 514 thousand people were left shelterless. According to the official information there were 25 thousand victims.

The earthquake also destroyed a number of architectural and historical monuments. 8461 monuments, including five churches were leveled to earth. The total value of the destroyed monuments was 658 million AMD. On the whole the total loss inflicted by the earthquake was 10 billion AMD>

Every year all the Armenians recall the countries which lent a helping hand to the nation in those hard days.

Every year a requiem mass is served in the churches in memory of the victims of the terrible earthquake.
