Rise in price on bread for 10, 20 or even 40 drams is becoming usual. Acknowledging this at stores, the citizens say: “They should return the money allocated to people before the elections”.

Armine Udumyan, press secretary of the Armenian Economic Competition Protection State Committee, said to “A1+” that the Committee was conducting monitoring on prices and had noticed changes.

The press secretary also informed that no managing body was obliged to agree its prices with the Committee.

She explained the raise of bread price after each election this way: “The investigations showed that the grain is little this year, that is why the price on bread is increasing. Besides every election period concurs with harvest period. Last year grain price raised but after harvest it reduced again”. According to her, grain and flour are imported into Armenia with very little quantity. “That also influenced on the rise in price”, said Armine Udumyan.

Armen Poghosyan, chairman of Consumers Association, said to “A1+” that the rise in bread price depended on the expenditures during the elections. “It is obvious, that commercial institutions which exist in the government rise the prices so that they will be able to recover the expenditures of the elections”, said Armen Poghosyan.

He pointed that they always received complaints for consumers, but their number had increased with the rise in prices.

Besides increasing the price on flour, prices on confectionery have also raised. The rise in price on bread affect not only its quality, its weight also suffers.

Started form 1 June a Quality Inspectorate was set in the RA Ministry of Agriculture. “But since the Inspectorate is in the process of formation, it does not operate properly and most issues remain unsolved”, concluded Armen Poghosyan.
