DON’T YOU CARE FOR TAXI NAMES?

One can come across taxis with different names in Yerevan streets. For instance “Khanga,” “Tanta,” “Minutka,” “Taxi jan,” “Mosh,” “Granat,” as well as the names of titles, castles, trees and flowers, marketplaces, etc.


Most taxi names arouse uncertainty among Armenians. A1+ tried to find out the reasons for the strange names from the taxi services. “Lanser” taxi service transports people by cars of Mitsubishi Lanser, hence the name of the service.


“Zolotoy Duke” means “Golden Cup.” The service owner used to have a snack bar in Paris, therefore he called his service by the name.


Supposedly, the owners of taxi services having names of cartoons were fond of these cartoon characters in their childhood.


The owner of “Gayot” taxi service gave the most original answer.


What does the word Gayot mean?


The word has a Greek origin?


And who is Gayot?


To tell the truth, I don’t know.


You gave your service a name you don’t know where comes from!

In reply to our question who is to regulate the sphere and set criteria for services, the Ministry of Transportation said that they only grant licenses to taxi services. Taxi names are registered in the state registry of legal entities under the Ministry of Justice. The latter informed us that they don’t deal with the names of taxi services. “We only register the name of a company. A company can register by one name and function by another,” Armen Gevorgyan.


A1+ made inquiries from the State Language Inspectorate as well. According to them recently a taxi service has been fined for its foreign name.
