ARMENIA TO LEAVE THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2008

Sports

The Champions League First knockout Qualifying Round is now over. Champions from 28 lowest-ranked European countries participated in it. For the first time in the past 7 years the Armenian Champion had to leave the League, losing both matches of the first round.

Competing with the champion of Cyprus “Anorthosis”, “Pyunik” was unable to score a single goal, while it received 3 instead.

The first qualifying round was successful for our neighbours Georgia and Azerbaijan, who will continue the struggle in the second round. Champion of Georgia “Dinamo Tbilisi” easily beat NSI Runavik with the final score 3:1.

Champion of Azerbaijan “Inter” drew with Macedonian “Rabotnicki” (final score 1:1) gaining access into the second round. From the former USSR countries the League is not yet over for Latvia (“Ventspils”), Lithuania (“Kaunas”), Belarus (“BATE”) and Moldova (“Sheriff”).

Armenian football teams also fail the matches in the UEFA Cup. Last week “Ararat” lost to “Belinzona” (Switzerland), and “Banants” was beaten by “Salzburg” (Austria).
