GABRIEL SARGSYAN: BEST ATHLETE OF ARMENIA

Best chess player of the Dresden Olympiad Gabriel Sargsyan has been recognized as Best Armenian Athlete of 2008. Based on results of a survey conducted by the Federation of Sport Journalists, the grosmeister was ahead of a number of medal-winners.

Forty-three journalists participated in the survey and as a result, Gabriel Sargsyan received 313 points. Coming in at second place is European champion, bronze medal-winner of the 2008 Olympic Games Tigran V. Martirosyan (289) who was playing in the 85 kilogram category. Weightlifter Tigran G. Martirosyan won in the European championship as well and won a bronze medal in the Olympics in Beijing, closing the top three with 276 points.

Grosmeister Levon Aronyan, who did fairly well this year, came in at 4th place. Russian wrestler Yuri Patrikeyev is at 5th place.

In general, only the medal-winners of the Beijing Olympics and the chess players of the Armenian chess team in the Dresden Olympiad were in the top ten, including:

The Armenian men’s chess team was recognized as the best team of Armenia. All 43 journalists of the survey placed the chess team first on their ballots.
