Student demonstration canceled in downtown Yerevan
Two journalists and scores of policemen today showed up near Yerevan State University to participate in a student protest organized by the New Conservative Movement. They waited for ten minutes and departed seeing no demonstrators on the site.
The Movement demands to cut down tuition fees, increase free seats in magistracy and post- graduate course, raise the salaries of teaching staff, and provide students with lodging in dormitories.
The policemen said they were unaware why the demonstration had been cancelled.
We learnt from the press service of the New Conservative Movement that the Yerevan Municipality had not sanctioned the demo for some unknown reasons and the organizers decided to cancel it to avoid clashes with law-enforcers.
Gagik Baghdasaryan, a senior representative of the Yerevan City Hall informed A1+ that the demonstration was rescheduled for May 17 near the Statue of Vardan Mamikonyan.
