The National Assembly's Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture and Sports postponed the introduction of the draft law on language in the NA agenda for 15 days. The decision was welcomed by Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan.

Asked whether the ministry is going to make compromises regarding the bill, Mr. Ashotyan said, "We are not fighting a war to speak about compromises. If there are people who think that the bill will guarantee excellent career for them, I wish them good luck. We are here to solve another important issue connected with education."

Ashotyan advised the opponents of the bill - Heritage and ARF-Dashnaktsutyun, to get acquainted with the bill before the parliamentary hearings.

"It is characteristic of us to criticize a document without reading it. In Armenia education is realized in the Armenian language," said Ashotyan.

The NA Committee also discussed the bills on the National Academy of Science and on scientific and scientific-technical activities. Committee member Anahit Bakhshyan underlined that the bill on the NAS gives the NAS President more powers than the president of the country has.

"You simply want to give freedom to NAS President in his activities, don't you?" she asked.

Mrs. Bakhshyan called Deputy Minister of Justice Gevorg Malkhasyan who participated in today's discussion "a famous restorer of useless laws" who distorts all amendments submitted by the opposition.
