Sculptor Levon Igityan says the 19 years of independence marked no changes from a creative standpoint.

"In the Soviet era, we lived in the totalitarian regime where the state put pressure on people because it paid them. However, art critics resisted the pressure and created masterpieces. Today we feel no pressure. We failed to understand the essence of independence," he said.

"In the Soviet years I did not feel chained and painted whatever I wanted," said President of the Artists' Union of Armenia Karen Aghamyan.

"Generally speaking, independence gave more opportunities to communicate with the world. It ensured freedom of information and independent thinking which are very important for individual painters," he added.

Chairman of "Four Scorpions" Cultural Organization Hayk Mutafyan did not agree with Aghamyan and Igityan.

"Independence has changed our mode of life, culture and revealed new people who wanted to portray everything through art. Let us hope that masterpieces will come yet," he said.
