Striped hyena reappeared in Armenia 60 years after their disappearance, the Armenian branch of the World Wildlife Federation (WWF) reports.

On October 1, while conducting regular monitoring of leopards near Armenian village Nrnadzor WWF experts found the body of a stripped hyena entangled on a barbed-wire fence of an orchard.

The animal carcass was fresh enough to determine its species.
"The first reliable information about hyenas dates back to 1940, when one was seen on the western outskirts of Yerevan. According to some sources, hyenas were occasionally found in the basin of the Araks River in the 20th century."

The main reason for the disappearance of these animals was the decrease in their living space," WWF experts say.
