Hunger strike canceled
Varujan Melkonyan, deputy head of the Penitentiary Department of the RA Ministry of Justice, today visited the Sevan Penitentiary Department to meet the 26 convicts who went to protest in the morning.
The inmates ascended the roof and demanded early release citing the law which envisages early parole for inmates serving most of the prison sentence.
In the second half of the day, the convicts terminated the protest saying they are starting termless hunger strike.
"During the meeting, Mr. Melkonyan asked us to stop the protest and wait for the decision of the Early Release Committee. He promised that all convicts who had served most of their sentences would be freed," they said.
The committee is scheduled to convene a sitting in six days.
