There were only some schoolchildren and a couple at Yerevan Zoo today in spite of the warm weather and the fact that most animals were outside.

"We mainly have visitors after the season opens on May 1," said Head of Yerevan Zoo Sahak Abovyan who was also overseeing the renovation.

"There are many complaints that the cages are too narrow and uncomfortable. Those who criticize are right, but they don't take into account the fact that there hasn't been any renovation for the past 70 years and that the zoo lacks the necessary means for that," said Sahak Abovyan.

A new, broader cage for tigers and 4 of the lions was built in the winter and the construction of a cage for vultures is underway.
The employees are mainly pensioners who have been working at the zoo for years and know the animals very well.

"We also have a young worker, but the youth rarely agree to work here due to the low salary," said Sahak Abovyan.
This year Yerevan Zoo will celebrate its 70th anniversary with a scientific conference and the release of booklets about the zoo. "If the zoo receives government funding, we plan to host delegates from over 60 countries in Armenia. That is an accepted order of celebrating anniversaries in all countries. I myself am invited to other countries for celebrations," said the zoo director, adding that the zoo has appealed for funding and is waiting for a response.

According to Sahak Abovyan, the events are scheduled to be held in August and September and renovation will continue until then.
