The first case with HIV infection was reported in 1988, while the first death was recorded in 1989. About 1127 HIV-infected people were registered in the country between 1988 and 2011.
Males constitute a majority in the total number of HIV cases - 797 cases (70,7 %), females make up 330 cases (29,3 %) and children make up 22 cases (2%).
The main modes of HIV transmission are through injecting drug use and heterosexual practices.
Besides, there are also registered cases of mother-to-child HIV transmission as well as through blood transfusions and homosexual practices.
The overwhelming majority of the HIV-positive individuals belong to the age group of 20-39.
From the beginning of the epidemic 258 death cases have been registered among HIV/AIDS patients (including 43 women and 5 children).
