Trees were cut down in Yerevan's Nor Nork 2nd massive a couple of days ago.

Grisha Mikaelyan, chief agronomist of "Greening" Company, said they were uprooting the stumps to plant new trees instead.

The head of Nor Nork district, Melik Gasparyan, says he has not given permission for felling the trees and says the police are investigating the felling which was carried out at night.

"Those guilty must be punished, since the green area belongs to our citizens," he stressed, excluding that a new building or complex might appear in the area in the near future.

Twenty-four saplings will be planted in the area in the coming days.

"If the saplings do not grow, we shall plant new ones in spring," he added.

Ministry of Nature Protection responds to felling

Inspectors of the Ministry of Nature Protection today visited the area where they found eight chopped trees. According to preliminary data, the damage caused to nature totals AMD 250,000.

Ministry's Spokesperson Hasmik Mkrtchyan informed A1+ that a protocol had been drawn up to be sent to the police department of Nor Nork district.
