Football player to run in presidential elections
Former football player of the French national football team and the British Manchester United, Eric Cantona intends to run in the upcoming French presidential elections.
However, the player is currently busy collecting the required 500 signatures, and he has to be supported by state officials. For that purpose, Cantona has sent letters to the mayors of French cities with the request for support.
"Our country is facing a difficult choice that will determine its future," the player wrote in his letters.
The first stage of the French presidential elections will be held in late April, and if necessary, the second stage will start in early May.
Local presses say French President Nikola Sarkozy's main competitor will be Socialist Francois Oland.
