Environmentalists continue protest in downtown Yerevan
Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan will meet on Tuesday the environmentalists who have been staging a protest in the capital's Mashtots Avenue since February 11.
On Saturday, some 30 activists formed a wall in the avenue demanding to stop the removal of the demolished kiosks from Abovyan Avenue to Mashtots Avenue. The environmentalists are protesting against the destruction of green space.
Activist Eghia Nersisyan told A1+ that the meeting with the mayor was arranged at their request.
"We do not expect anything serious at this point, everything will be clear after the meeting," said activist Arman Yaralyan.
The group reminds that in the result of the protest, the illegal construction was halted on Saturday. However, they fear lest the works should resume if they leave the site.
The activists say that even in this severe cold they are banned from making a fire and heating themselves.
"These people stayed in Trchkan, Teghut and I think that they will not leave the area unless they have the issue finally settled," said Yaralyan.
The group also initiated collection of signatures against the construction and has already gathered 300 signatures.
