Construction of the highest tower-has completed in Tokyo, Japan. The height of the Tokyo Sky Tree, as the tower is called, is 634 metres, 34 metres more than Guangzhou's Canton Tower in China.

Construction of the Tokyo Sky Tree began in July 2008, with 580 000 people working on the construction site. Overall, 65 billion yen (about 812 million dollars) was spent on the construction.

The tower is due to be opened to the public on May 22.
The tower will carry TV signals for some of the country's major broadcasters.

It will have two observations decks open to the public. It was certified as the tallest freestanding tower by Guinness World Records in November 2011 after overtaking Guangzhou's Canton Tower.

However, the Tokyo Sky Tree yields to Dubai's Burj Khalifa which is 828 metres.
