What do citizens of Armenia lack for the formation of a full-fledged civil society? According to information of the Ministry of Justice, Armenia registered 5,000 non-governmental unions in 2011.
Member of the Public Council Hovhannes Hovhannisyan finds that social indifference and disappointment are what impede the development of civil society in Armenia.
"We respond to phenomena when they are related to our yards, our close ones and us personally," Hovhannisyan said during a press conference today.
Hovhannisyan says the transformation of social movements to political movements is normal. According to him, the youth who have gone through struggle and have a clear understanding of concrete issues can join the political elite.
"We have to be honest. If a social movement turns into a political one, it has to be announced," the Public Council member said.
