"There are about 600 000 sheep in Armenia today and we are planning to increase the number to 1 500 000 by 2020," Armenia's Deputy Minister of Agriculture Grisha Baghyan told journalists on Wednesday.

In reply to A1+'s question whether the Ministry is exercising quality control over dairy products given the fact that various infections have been discovered in them recently, the Ministry official said, "That infection is called brucellosis which is caused by ingestion of unsterilized milk and home-made dairy products. I have never heard a dairy company encounter similar problems."

During today's press conference, the Deputy Minister also said that Armenia's meat imports amounted to 54 000 tons last year, with local consumption making 127,000 tons.
"We are eager to boost local production. Once we total consumption to 180.000 tons we shall be able to meet domestic demand," said Mr Baghyan.

When reminded that the Consumers Union announced a few days before that Armenia imports low-quality and harmful products, the deputy minister of agriculture advised addressing the question personally to the chairman of the union.
