Court to hear abuse appeal May 19
On May 19, the Court of General Jurisdiction of Ararat and Vayots Dzor marzes (provinces) will hold hearing in the case of Mariam Gevorgyan, a 20-year-old woman subjected to abuse by her husband and mother-in-law.
In late 2009, Mariam Gevorgyan married Davit Ziroyan and left for St. Petersburg with her husband. Mariam says that soon after the marriage she was subjected to cruel abuses. In October, 2010, she returned to Armenia, and a criminal case was filed against her ex-husband and mother-in-law Haykanush Mikayelyan.
The trial started on May 14 but the sitting was adjourned shortly afterwards as Gevorgyan's lawyer Nona Galstyan asked the court to give time to get acquainted with the case material. The judge in the case upheld the motion, giving the lawyer 15 days, the Coalition to Stop Violence against Women in Armenia reports.
