Armenian teen heroes are back
Although astronomy is taught as a facultative subject in Armenia, the country has won four medals - one gold, one silver and two bronze - at the 17th International Astronomy Olympiad.
"We were competing with such countries that have great scientific and technical bases and pay special attention to astronomy both in schools and in general," Marieta Gyulzadyan, head of the Armenian delegation and Phys-Mat school astrophysics teacher, told a press conference on Friday.
The Olympiad held in South Korea from Oct. 17 to 23 included three stages - theoretical, practical and observational. Phys-Mat school pupil Gevorg Martirosyan won a gold medal at the Olympiad. He was also awarded a special diploma for demonstrating the best results during the Olympiad.
Our main rivals were from India, Kazakhstan and Korea. The total score was decided at the end of the three rounds," he said.
