Alexan Petrosyan, a lawmaker of the National Assembly from Armavir province says he has suffered damage in the amount of approximately $ 400. 000 in the result of the May 12 devastating hailstorm in the province that destroyed entire crops in about 46 communities.

Petrosyan has set up a fund to help the farmers of the affected villages. Talking to journalists on May 27, the MP said his aim is to render assistance to helpless villagers.

"I shall give my portion to the most vulnerable family. How can I take that money?" said the MP.
As reported earlier about 12 000 households were hit by the severe hailstorm with the overall damage estimated at 25 billion drams ($60 million).

RA Police were the first to join the fundraising initiative by transferring 11 mln drams to the fund. Alexan Petrosyan calls on everyone to follow suit and help the desperate farmers.

Speaking about the government's decision to reschedule repayment of the loans the farmers had taken from banks before the natural disaster, Mr Petrosyan (nicknamed Alik of MAP) said the loans are given to farmers at high interest rates -24% while it should not exceed 10%.
"If bankers baked bread and sold it at $ 1000 people will buy it anyway as the product is of high demand," said Alexan Petrosyan.
