Hrayr Ulubabyan, the head of the initiative group for the protection of rights of Sumgait Armenians, is surprised that Armenian authorities do not go to the European Court and seek justice for the Sumgait massacres. “The Convention on Genocide [Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide] clearly states that one of the parties can appeal to the European Court of Human Rights but, as you see, our authorities remain silent. Azerbaijan continues to deny the Sumgait massacres, describing the events as hooliganism, distorting the facts on the Internet and arguing that Armenians exaggerate the events of February 1988. “For three to four days they were unmercifully slaughtering helpless people. How could the victims be 25-26? I have repeated and proved many times that the number of victims totaled 100. I do not even want to speak about the information on the Internet where the impression is created that the massacres were perpetrated by Armenians,” said Mr. Ulubabyan. He says only the Armenian authorities can call the attention of the international community on the Sumgait pogrom by ‘recognizing the genocide at the National Assembly and appealing to the European Court.’ “What they really need is a desire. I have numerous facts at hand,” he concluded.
