Human rights activist: Innocent people are put behind bars (video)
The European Court of Human Rights continues to issue rulings against the Republic of Armenia, obliging the country t to pay hundreds of thousands of euros from the state budget. Human rights activist Janna Alexanyan accounts it for the poor condition of our judiciary. “The judicial system in Armenia is worse now than it was some 15 years ago. The system has not been restored after the March 1 2008 post-election clashes when orders were issued to arrest everyone without exception and mass arrests followed. The courts were executing the order of [second President] Robert Kocharyan and that obedient system still needs to be restored,” she said. The human rights activist regrets to say that the methods for handling military cases have remained much the same. “The cases dealing with murders in the ranks, military crimes and acts of violations are in the same condition as is the notorious Mataghis case. We see innocent people behind bars instead of guilty ones,” she said. Janna Alexanyan claims that judges and investigators must be punished for the mistakes that tarnish the reputation of the state and cause material loss.
