Court of Cassation rejects appeal by civil activist's lawyer
The Court of Cassation has rejected an appeal by the lawyer of civil activist Hayk Kyureghyan, who was sentenced to 9 years in prison by a Yerevan court, Datalex.am reports. Mushegh Shushanyan, the lawyer of civil activist Hayk Kyureghyan, lodged an appeal with the Court of Cassation requesting to annul the November 2015 decision of the Criminal Court of Appeal which upheld the verdict of the lower court. Hayk Kyureghyan was arrested following an incident that occurred on July 12, 2014 before a trial of opposition Tsekhakron Party leader Shant Haroutyunyan and his friends. Kyureghyan climbed atop a car in a court yard and shot an air pistol off several times in the direction of the police to protest the way political trials are handled in Armenia. In September 2015, Hayk Kyureghyan was sentenced to 9 years in prison.
