Journalism is among the most deadly professions in the world (video)
The death of an NPR journalist and his translator in southern Afghanistan Sunday confirmed once again that journalism is among the world's most deadly professions. Some journalists are killed accidentally in war zones or while covering violent conflicts; others are targeted by criminals, political factions or terrorists. Last year, more than 70 journalists were killed worldwide. Zlatica Hoke reports they were honored at an event in Washington Monday. Washington Newseum, an institution dedicated to journalism, paid tribute to 20 men and women from 11 who were killed in 2015 while covering the news. “2015 was an especially tragic year for journalists and that is why we have selected twenty, much higher number than usual, to represent all those who were killed,” said Newseum President and CEO Jeffrey Herbst. Most of the journalists on the wall were killed overseas – Iraq, Syira, and, 8 in the the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris. Alison and Adam are the first to die on U.S. soil since 2007. The names of the 20 victims were added to the Journalists Memorial at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. More details can be found here
