Armenia has launched this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence as part of activities to commemorate this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Members of the Society Without Violence NGO handed out flyers to passers-by in the streets of the Armenian capital. Sona Hovakimyan, a member of the NGO, says many cases of violence could be prevented if people were well aware of gender violence in all its forms. “The better people are informed about their rights, the easier it will be for them to receive assistance and help.” She added that more women are calling their hotline to report about cases of violence. “The stone has finally moved. Today, women are more willing to contact us and ask for advice and help. Anyway, I regret to say that women do not feel protected in their homes and are forced to seek protection,” Sona Hovakimyan added. The global movement against gender violence is gathering momentum every year as more and more people worldwide join their voices to say “NO” to violence against women by participating in a wide range of activities within the framework of “16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence” Campaign which starts on November 25th and ends December 10th.
