Communist: We felt protected in Soviet times (video)
The Soviet Union was formed 76 years ago on this day. Talking to reporters in Yerevan on November 29, Tachat Sargsyan, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Armenia (HKK), said before joining the Soviet Union, Armenia’s economy had declined about 12 times. There were 13 schools in Armenia, including seven secondary and six non-secondary schools. But after the country joined the USSR, the number of schools increased to 1000. More things were built in the Soviet Armenia during those years than in the history of the Armenian people,” Tachat Sargsyan stressed in his speech. The Communist says Armenia was looted during the years of independence. When asked about Armenia’s fate if the USSR continued to exist, Mr. Sargsyan said, “Surely, Armenia would be the most prosperous and flourishing country. In Soviet times, there were more than 400 industrial enterprises in the country. More than 10 000 people worked at the National Academy of Science. We felt protected at that time.” Tachat Sargsyan thinks that a referendum should be held to decide whether Armenians want Russian to become a second official language in the country or not. “It will be great if each Armenian knows Russian, English, French and other languages.”
