«Armenian government must with decisive actions support international structures take appropriate measures against Azerbaijan for destroying monuments in Jugha and Nakhichevan.
Armenian government may attain certain results if it turns the problem into one of the directions of the foreign policy”, - the statement of Pan-Armenian committee on protection of Armenian monuments says. As member of committee, a writer Grigor Janikyan noted, «While we speak our enemies continue their «black deeds». In Western Armenia the monuments are not only destroyed but also profaned.
According to the calculations of foreign scientists in 17th century there were 10 000 khachkars in Jugha dating 9-17 centuries. By 1970s 6000 of them had already been annihilated, at that most them after 1920. Janikyan said they were keeping silent in the Soviet years, as there was no State system.
Today the members of the committee noted that they'd already done what they had to meaning the agitation on protection of Armenian monuments, and now it's government's turn. The letter-statement was sent to nearly 300 individuals and international organizations.
By the way, the committee admonishes Armenian government to bring an action against Azerbaijan for destroying Armenian medieval monuments, to seize the cost of the destroyed monuments and their restoration and to obtain permission for quartering international forces in Nakhijevan to defend the monuments there.
