WORLD STILL REMEMBERS “A1+”
Support A1+!On Tuesday, an International Press Convention was held in New York. Alsy Hastings, US Congressman and the Chairman of Helsinki Committee reminded that independant TV Company “A1+” was banned. To remind, he had been the Chairman of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly for two years.
His speech was addressed to Freedom of Press in OSCE countries. He mentioned, “ referring to the speeches of US Department and OSCE Press Executive, the acting officials both in Armenia and Azerbaijan strive to keep Independant Press, particularly TV Broadcast under control. For instance, once ‘A1+’ was banned, it never reopened.”
US DP condemned Azerbaijan for arresting a state reporter last week.
In this respect, Reporters Defense Committee considered Russia the worst country in the world. 42 journalists had been killed in Russia since 1992.
Caren Huse, US Secretary PR deputy highlighted the fact that the role of journalists had never been so indispensable and they had never been as harassed as nowadays.
' We are facing times of threats. Today, journalists are more likely to suffer from threats and harassments then ever,' Huse underlined. Due to his data, last year more than 130 journalists were imprisoned for their professional activities.
As Chairman of OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Alsy Hastings visited Armenia in November, 2005. He suggested inviting OSCE Observers Mission to participate in the Constitutional reforms at the venue with high ranking officialdom.
To note, RA officials did not invite any OSCE observer at the Constitution Reform Forum.
