Over 1230 students stay in the seventh building of Zeytun students' community. The hostel once had ten buildings. Today only one of them is occupied by students. Under the government's decision other buildings have been given to the French and European Academies.

"We are really concerned over the increasing number of universities. Nobody cares about our students who have nowhere to live," said Arthur Matinyan, superintendent of Zeytun students' community.

Matinyan says they cannot provide regional students with rooms as the hostel is overcrowded (three students live in one room).

In their turn, students complain of the increasing rent which has totaled AMD 50 000 a month against the former AMD 44 000.

"The hostel is owned by "Zeytun students' community" Fund and the rents are set by the fund's Board of Trustees," said Matinyan.

Living conditions in the hostel are very sorrowful. Students have to use a common kitchen and toilet. Besides, they have to pay 500 drams for bathing.

"We plan to renovate the building and better living conditions. I hope that by the new academic year the hostel will become a comfortable and well-arranged place to live in," said Matinyan.
