$12 286 478 pledged at Telethon 2011
The 14th International Telethon organized by the Hayastan All-Armenian kicked off in Los Angeles on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, and was aired live from 8:00 p.m. to 8.a.m Yerevan time.
This year the telethon raised $ 12 286 478 in pledges. Proceeds from the telethon will benefit the development of modern drinking and irrigation water systems in Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh.
Airing live from Hollywood, California, the show was televised throughout the globe on satellite and cable networks. This year the system of SMS donations also operated in the Russian Federation.
In 2010, the Fund raised $20.8 million to help improve life conditions by developing the drinking water distribution network in deprived areas of Karabakh. As a result, over 27 000 people will soon have permanent access to clean water.
The shortage of water is a serious problem in Artsakh. On average, each family spends 40% of their daily lives carrying water from a source 2-5 miles away. That water is not always clean and 88% of all diseases are related to tainted drinking water.
