Renowned soprano Montserrat Caballe returns to Artsakh
World-famous operatic singer Montserrat Caballe arrived in Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) on Sunday. She is scheduled to give a concert in the city’s main square on Oct. 14 dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the truce in the Karabakh. The renowned Spanish soprano will also conduct master-classes for young opera singers at a musical college in capital Stepanakert. She is also scheduled to meet with President Bako Sahakyan and the primate of the Armenian Apostolic Churches Artsakh diocese, Archbishop Pargev Martirosyan. Caballe arrived in Artsakh with her family members, as well as a Spanish tenor and an accompanist. The visit was organized by Karabakh ministry of culture and youth affairs and Starmus Company. Montserrat Caballe first visited Artsakh in June 2013. On December 12, 2013, her album “Armenia and Artsakh: The Island of Christianity” was presented in Paris. During the presentation, the renowned singer promised to visit Artsakh again. “… I am returning to Artsakh; this time to sing for you. In your country which is little but strong, I will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ceasefire with you. I hope to see you in Stepanakert, meet my old friends and sing for them for the peace and prosperity of Artsakh,” the singer said in her letter addressed to President Bako Sahakyan. Montserrat Caballe was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1933. In 1974, she was named Honorary Ambassador of the UN; 17 years later she was given the title of Ambassador of Peace. In 1994, Caballe was designated as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.
