The largest interest in books and literature was seen in 2012 when Yerevan was declared World Book Capital, literary critic Arkmenik Nikoghosyan said on July 9. He says their studies in bookstores, libraries, and in social networks show that there is an active group of readers in Armenia that mainly consists of young people. “About 70% of books in bookstores are bought by young people aged between 18 and 33. A similar picture was observed in libraries, too,” he said. The literary critic says the belief of the older generation that young people do not love books and literature is only a myth. Arkmenik Nikoghosyan says today more books are translated from other languages into Armenian than in the past. “We can buy the Armenian version of the books either immediately or several months after their publication.” Speaking about modern writers, Mr. Nikoghosyan said they are in demand among readers. “If five years ago they sold 3-5 books, today they are selling 700-800 copies and even more,” he stressed. The literary critic says Gurgen Khanjyan, Aram Pachyan, Levon Khechoyan, Hovhannes Grigoryan are in high demand among readers in Armenia.
